Post-Surgical Instructions for
Endovenous Laser Treatment/Ambulatory Phlebectomy (EVLT/AP) and
Radio Frequency Ablation (Closure)

  • The local anesthesia will last at least 1-2 hours following the procedure.
  • Moderate discomfort may be present, with the most discomfort occurring 1 week from now as the leg heals. You can decrease the likelihood of discomfort if you take an anti-inflammatory medication (Motrin, Advil, of Ibuprofen 400mg) 3 times a day for 7 days. You have also been given a prescription for a pain reliever. Please reserve this for “breakthrough” pain that is not controlled with the anti-inflammatory medication.
  • You will be asked to walk at the office for a few minutes before leaving. If necessary for you to travel for an hour or more, please stop and walk around for 10 minutes. This activity will help dissipate any discomfort you may have, maintain good circulation and empty your leg veins with the muscular activity that walking creates.
  • Please do foot exercises, simply flexing the foot at the ankle and pulling your toes toward you. This also helps with circulation and decreases venous pressure.
  • After your procedure you will have a dressing and compression wraps on your leg. You may remove these the next day (evening) and shower. Apply the stockings for 2 weeks following your treatment. A 6” Ace wrap may be added from the mid-thigh up to the groin for added comfort and compression. This can be added on top of the compression dressing following your procedure or over the support hose.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise such as aerobics, weight training, bicycling, and running for 1 week until all procedures are complete. Walking daily is encouraged and promotes speedy healing.
  • Avoid prolonged standing for the first week and elevate your leg(s) at least 3 times a day for 5-10 minutes.
  • We will see you in 1 week to check you leg. We will perform a limited ultrasound first, followed by a brief visit with the doctor.
  • We expect you to resume all your pre-procedure activities including work. We would like you to continue to keep moving and maintain a normal level of activity.

In 4 weeks after your procedure, we will need to examine your leg again. At this time, you may require ultrasound-guided injections for any remaining veins.
